Item Description
Unusual antique French mirror, circa 1880, with four curved corners. The beautifully etched gilt frame has a partly geometric, partly foliate design which changes into a fanned leaf at each corner. Where the mirror has been dusted for more than 150 years, the gilding has thinned on the outer and inner edges, giving a narrow terracotta border on each side of the gold etching. Photographed on a rare, sunny, day the etching is the same colour all the way around the frame and just as visible on all four sides. The mirror plate from the same period has only a hint of age and gives an excellent reflection. This mirror can be hung landscape as well as portrait (as photographed).
