A Younger were one of the best British makers of contemporary furniture from around 1955 to the late 1960’s. Their design director John Herbert was very talented and came up with some really stylish designs. This set is from the Volnay range which was introduced in 1956 and made for over a decade such was it’s lasting popularity. You’ll see lots of Volnay sideboards for sale today, but not so many of the tables which were made in this size and a slightly longer one also. The bench was a later addition to the range, but we don’t know when it was first made but it was last shown in their 1964 catalogue whilst the table and chairs were still being made in 196, but not in 1968.

Although these lovely well made benches were made by Youngers for a good number of years not that many of them were sold as they rarely come up for sale. As we specialise in Younger pieces we’ve sold more than anyone else. Between 2017 and 2020 we were really lucky to find 5 all of which sold quickly, but this is the first time we’ve had the chance to buy one since 2025. Like the others we’ve had in the past we bought it from the family of the original owners. It came with a matching refectory table which is shown in one of the photos. It’s ideal for families as it will seat 4 children or 3 adults. The original chairs had gone, but we had another 4 from another property. They look great as a set.

Condition
All the wood has been cleaned and oiled and is looking good with no obvious marks or damage. The seats have all been re-upholstered in a nice smart black wool. As with all vintage furniture you must expect to see some small signs of wear if you look very closely.
