Item Description
Scarce Uniflex rosewood dining table and 6 chairs designed by Peter Hayward 1964
This stylish recognisable design has usually been described as by Gunther Hoffstead as he designed most of Uniflex’s furniture in the early and mid 1960’s, but it’s actually by Peter Hayward who had designed for them prior to that. This and a similarly designed bedroom suite were introduced in 1964. Both were equally well known British designers at the time. Our information comes from an original article in a 1964 trade paper. They were more expensive than their standard range and weren’t made in large numbers so don’t come up for sale that often.
Condition
The table is in really good vintage condition with no obvious fading or marks, although there are a couple of long shallow scratches which are visible if you look very closely. They could be removed, but it would mean stripping and re-polishing the complete top which is a time taking job for something that isn’t that obvious.
The 6 chairs are also in good vintage condition with very minor cracking to the seat edges. 3 of the leather backs have been replaced by a traditional saddler, but that’s only noticeable on very close inspection ( done about 5 years ago by previous owners ).
