Item Description

ANTIQUE ORIGINAL OIL ON CANVAS PAINTING DEPICTING A MALE SITTER, EARLY TO MID 20TH CENTURY

A captivating portrait of a handsome, slightly preppy man with a blond quiff dressed in a crisp white cotton shirt gazing thoughtfully into the distance.

Painted in a sensitive manner with plenty of feeling and emotion. The work is initialled to the lower left ‘J.M.R.’. We haven’t been able to attribute the work but it appears to be by a good, confident hand.

There is also a plaque to the frame engraved ‘A. E. Messenger 1907-1950’ this is believed to be the sitter.

Probably dating from the early to mid 20th century period. If I had to guess I would say it probably dates from the 1930s. If the sitter was 30 when the portrait was painted this would date to 1937.

Framed is a simple, and complementary deep set gilt frame.

The painting is in good vintage condition with no serious issues and some minor wear commensurate with age.

Approximate overall measurements: 63cm x 45cm x 5cm. The canvas measures approximately 51cm x 33cm.
