Item Description
Two antique Shotgun ammunition wooden crates, originally used to transport shotgun cartridges safely from the factory by railway to the customer.
Both are constructed from pine and are fully stamped.
One is stamped ‘Kynoch Birmingham, Safety Cartridges, Explosive, Class VI, Division I, Not Liable to Explode in Bulk‘.
The other is stamped ‘Eley, Small Arms Ammunition, Manufactured and Loaded in Great Britain at the Birmingham Factories of Imperial Chemical Industries Ltd. London’.
Both have their old railway transport labels still attached.
They probably date from the early to the mid-20th century period, Circa 1920s-1940s, the old railway transport labels date them to pre-1948.
The crates are in good vintage order, they are solid and sturdy and still usable. There is wear throughout commensurate with age and use, which we think adds to their charm and tells their story. There is some old woodworm present that we have treated for good measure. One has a hardwood lid added with brass hinges, but this can easily be removed if desired.
Approximate measurements:
Eley 36cm wide x 25cm deep x 23cm high.
Kynoch 35cm wide x 25cm deep x 25cm high.
