Item Description

Crate Chair Priced per Chair (5 Available) After a design by Gerrit Rietveld. Possibly by Metz & Co. Dutch Architect and Furniture designer Gerrit Rietveld (1888-1964) designed the first pieces of crate furniture in 1934 from inexpensive planks of pine or larch, joined by screws. Inspired by the strength of the crates used to transport furniture. They collection was designed for acquaintances who had no money but wanted to make a modern piece of furniture. He was lambasted at the time for "Professional Decay" His repost was simple it was a "Free carpentry method which goes straight to the point, is strong and innocent of the knitted brows of our craftsmen." It was delivered as a do it yourself kit by Metz & Co dept Store for the customer, and had options to be painted although Rietveld preferred them unpainted. These chairs remain unpainted and are Circa 1970. As expected condition, absolutely solid. Wear and patination as expected. Priced Per Chair. Five available. Pine or Larch Netherlands, Circa 1970.
