Item Description
This is a magnificent and rare antique Italian winged lion or the Lion of St Mark that is carved as a deep relief from white marble dating from the 18th century. Discovered recently, this stunning sculptural treasure comes from Venice, where it is used as the symbol of the city and formerly as the symbol of the Venetian Republic. The lion is holding a sword while resting on a book [bible]. Such lions were carved as reliefs to decorate grand palaces and buildings such as the facade of the Doge's Palace, and at the Scuola Grande di San Marco. A known theme in Venetian art, it was also present in armoury worn by noblemen. Today it is found as the award symbol of the Venice Film Festival, the "Golden Lion". Created with great artistry and craftsmanship the marble plaque measures about 29 x 39.5 x 6 cm or approximately 11.4 x 15.5 x 2.3 inches and it is in good antique condition with a lovely timeworn patina considering its age. It is exactly as I discovered it. For the full condition please refer to the images!
