Item Description
This an outstanding vintage Italian pendant that was discovered recently in Naples. It is made of a large natural red coral branch that is mounted in 18 carat gold. This is the finest red coral [Corallium rubrum] that grows in deep caves, crevices, and cliffs of the Mediterranean Sea, particularly around mainland Italy and Sardinia. Red coral jewelry has a history spanning 25,000 - 30,000 years. It is prized across the globe for its deep crimson color and organic texture. It is also believed that is has mystical and protective properties which made it valued, desired and treasured across many cultures. This particular example is exquisite in its natural form as well as in its impressive size - it measures about 6 x 5.8 cm or approximately 2.5 x 2.2 inches.
