Item Description
An impressive and very large scale antique English stone crest featuring the Royal Coat of Arms for the City of Bath, where it was originally fitted to a local authority building c.1850.
This large architectural crest was subject to a £20,000 restoration. Following its removal from its original setting, it was restored and mounted on a bespoke steel backing plate which enables it to be secured to a wall or hung from a chain.
Details of the Coat of Arms include two lions, a unicorn, a crown, a thistle, a rose and the following mottos, all hand carved into the stone:
Motto of British monarchs: ‘Dieu et mon droit’ (‘God and my right hand’ )
Motto of the Order of the Garter: ‘Honi soit qui mal y pense’ (‘Evil to him who evil thinks’)
CONDITION REPORT
Good structural condition. Old flaky paint. Minor weathering, losses and small historic repairs. Bespoke steel backing plate to reverse, enabling it to be mounted to a wall or hung from a chain.
