Item Description
A fabulous bronze rolling parallel ruler, made by Adie and Son, Edinburgh. Within the original mahogany case. Engraved with the maker’s identity and ‘Edinburgh’, further engraved with the owner’s identity, W.D.Cay.
Cased dimensions:25 1/8 in 3 7/8 in x 2 1/8 in
William Dyce Cay (1838-1925) was a harbour engineer, educated at the University of Edinburgh where in 1856 he won the highest mathematical prize, The Straiton Gold Medal. After completing his apprenticeship with James Thompson of Belfast he went on to be an assistant with B&E Blythe working on the Castle Douglas to Portpatrick Railway before settling on the construction of harbours. For many years he was the resident engineer at Aberdeen Harbour. He was elected Member of the Institution of Civil Engineers in 1872 and in 1882 Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh.
Adie & Son, founded by Alexander James Adie (1775- 1858) were opticians and instrument makers, originally appointed by King William IV.
