Item Description

A Derbyshire fluorspar egg mounted onto black marble as a paperweight. Early Victorian, circa 1850.

4.25 in x 3 in x h:2.5 in

Derbyshire grew into a major centre of geotourism during the Victorian era, the Queen herself becoming a significant patron of the region's arts. Ashford black marble was inlaid with many specimens of coloured stones in imitation of the valuable and popular Italian pietra dure that emanated from Florence, and the area had become famous during the previous century for its deposits of the rare and beautiful Blue John.
