Item Description

Political propaganda for Louis XIV by Charles Le Brun. A silver metal pocket box the lid inset with a cast steel, medal-like panel, the design taken quite exactly from the painting by Charles Le Brun ‘The Queens of Persia at the Feet of Alexander’. The scene is of Alexander following his Victory at Issus in the year 333; the Queens of Persia kneeling in homage at his feet. Le Brun presents Louis XIV as a new Alexander the Great and it was this painting that won for Le Brun the admiration of Louis XIV and the title of Official Painter to the King.
The box was perhaps made as a patch box; the surface of the steel to the reverse of the medal appears originally to have been highly polished, to a mirror-like finish. There is something of a crack through the medal which may have existed from the date of making. French circa 1710.
