Item Description
A small Arts & Crafts circular mirror attributed to Arthur W Simpson. The moulded oak surround decorated with trailing flowing foliage, all in beautifully hand carved releif. Retaining the original bevelled edge mirror plate of which show age with a good clear reflection. English, Circa 1910.
Dimensions: Diameter: 44.5 cm - 17 1/2 Inches, Depth: 2.75 cm - 1 Inch.
Born in 1847 in Kendal, Arthur W. Simpson was apprenticed first to Robert Rigg, a cabinet maker in Greenhow's Yard, Kendal and then as a carver to Gillows about 1875-79. He left Gillows in 1879 and spent the following years working as a journeyman and carver, working in London before returning to Kendal in 1855 to set up a workshop. Simpson exhibited regularly at The Arts and Crafts Exhibition Society meetings of C F A Voysey in the 1890s. His company was very successful, producing a wide range of furniture and ecclesiastical carvings.
