Beautiful 19th Century Swedish Toile Peinte wall hanging.
A large hand-painted linen wall hanging depicting a tranquil pastoral landscape with a central tree in the foreground, a brick arched bridge spanning a river, distant buildings with red-tiled roofs, wooded hills, and a small boat moored at the riverbank. The composition is framed by a painted foliate border. Executed in a restrained palette of soft greys, ochres, terracotta and muted blue-greens, the decoration reflects the influence of late 18th-century scenic wallpapers and decorative textiles.
The textile retains its original hand-sewn central join, indicating it was made from two widths of homespun linen. Evidence of hand-painted brushwork remains throughout despite age-related fading. The surface displays characteristic wear and has three small historic repairs.
