Item Description
Decorative antique French Regence period (1714-23) giltwood margin mirror with inner and outer frames which have a curling pattern of acanthus leaves running over a delicate criss-cross cut design. The two frame sections have pierced acanthus leaf corners with a central cameo which is possibly prince Louis XV. He was too young to rule and so France was governed at this time by Philippe d'Orleans, as Regent, hence the "regence" name given to this period of history. All the mercury glass in the mirror is original and every section has been hand-bevelled. There is light foxing in the glass but the mirror still gives a fair reflection and is in wonderful condition for a 300 year old item. Bought at auction in Bordeaux, it had come from an important house in that area.
