Item Description
Fyne Ladye afrormosia single 3 drawer chest
The simple design with it’s cut out handles is really stylish .Designed circa 1960 the modular Afrormosia Bedroom Group was high end furniture made using traditional cabinet making techniques. It was much more expensive at the time than bedroom furniture made by the larger companies such as G Plan, Austinsuite and Meredew so it doesn’t come up for sale in large numbers. Afrormosia is a dark African teak that was in use at the time but isn’t available today. Unlike teak and walnut it can’t be used as a thin veneer so it’s either used in the solid or as a very thick veneer/slice. There will be colour differences on some drawers due to the nature of the wood. The 1961 catalogue we have reads “Constructed of solid Afrormosia with Afrormosia veneers having a natural oiled finish requiring the minimum of attention to maintain”. This range is often described as Heals as they sold a lot of Fyne Ladye furniture in the early 1960’s, some of which have Heals labels attached, but it was also sold through high end provincial retailers / groups.
Bought with other matching pieces from the range, we have this 3 drawer one, 2 double 6 drawer chests, a desk and a 3 part dressing table ( reserved ). All are the same depth and height so if you’re looking for a group this is a rare chance to buy a few pieces together. At time of listing we also had a tall narrow chest from the same range.
62.5cms wide, 71.5cms high, 51cms deep
Condition
Cleaned and oiled and looking good with no obvious marks or scratches. As with all vintage furniture you must expect to see some minor signs of wear if you look very closely.
