Item Description

Iconic Finn Juhl teak Japan sofa by France and Son. Designed in 1953 by Finn Juhl for France & Daverkosen who in 1957 became France & Son the Japan sofa is a design classic that was way ahead of its time. Its simple, elegant and still looks modern today as all the best mid-century pieces do. Finn Juhl has to be my favourite designer from the period and if you go to Denmark you should make the pilgrimage to his house where so many of his designs can be seen. For some unknown reason a number of dealers say this design is from 1958, but its definitely 1953.

This is an early version that still retains its France & Son label in black which dates it to the late 1950s or early 1960s.Do note that the Japan series has been re-issued by permission of Finn Juhl’s widow but these are only available in oak or walnut. The teak that quality makers such as France & Son used was slow grown forest timber that is no longer available today. Original ones like this rarely come up for sale in the UK. The last one we had was about 8 years ago.

Condition
We’ve cleaned and oiled the teak frame and it has been re upholstered from the frame up. It is in a lovely Camira pure wool fabric with a felted finish. The colour chosen is very similar to an original colour and is a bluish green which is called Moray. Complies with UK domestic fire regulations.

Seat 180cms long 72cms deep approx . Teak frame 187.5cms wide
