Item Description
Pair of Mary Gregory style cranberry glass decanters
Mary Gregory was the name put to this style of enamelled decoration usually on cranberry glass from around 1900. It seems to be a bit of a myth that there was a lady of that name decorating glass. These probably date to circa 1980 when the antique pieces had become very collectable. The originals usually much more crudely decorated and the shapes not so sophisticated. These have been nicely blown and have polished pontils so will have been expensive when new. The white enamelled decoration has been nicely painted.
The mallet shape is a typical late 18th century one and we think they look really stylish. They would make a fabulous present for a ruby wedding anniversary !
Its really nice to have a pair as they usually come singly, mainly with the female figure, but here we have a girl facing one way and a boy the other way.
