Item Description
Scarce G Plan Danish teak carver/desk chair by Ib Kofod Larsen 1962
Ib Kofod Larsen designed the Danish design range in 1962 for G Plan as a premium range where Danish design met good quality British manufacture at a mid-way price . He initially designed 3 chairs for the range and this was by far the most expensive model . This was also the only one to be offered with a carver option . The other 2 models cost £8 7 shillings and 6d and £10 5shillings each , whereas the standard chair of this design was £15 and the carver £19 10shillings . This was a lot for a dining chair in 1963 when standard chairs cost around £6 or £7 each and most people couldn’t have afforded to pay this amount , so very few were sold . They are a much more solid design than the cheaper Danish Design models as well as being more comfortable .
Bought along with other other pieces from the range from the family of the original owners who bought it new in 1963 . The range was sold until about 1966 . We also have listed a set of 6 matching standard dining chairs separately . The carver chairs make great desk chairs and very rarely appear for sale .
We’ve had it re-upholstered in a lovely petrol blue coloured felted wool .
Condition
The frame cleaned and oiled with no obvious marks or damage , the seat totally re-upholstered . As with all vintage furniture you must expect to see some minor signs of wear if you look very closely .
Notes
The 1963 G Plan Danish Design brochure we have says of the range in a paragraph that says ” A last word about prices . Even though prices are below that of imported furniture , this furniture cannot be called cheap , for it takes time and a great deal of skilled labour to produce furniture as superbly made as this . But remember , this is furniture that will beautify your home for a lifetime ” .
Another paragraph says ” G Pan Danish has a long future . As you can see G Plan Danish has the classical simplicity of line which means that it will go anywhere , with anything , and will never , never date . This is not furniture that you will live with for a few years and then tire of . This is furniture you will live with all your life , furniture that will mellow with age , that your children will grow up with ”
60+ years later we think this is still true and in real terms taking inflation into account the price today is little different , yet today high end furniture would cost you far more and is less likely to be around in another 60 years !
59.5cms wide , arm height 64.5cms , seat height 44cms , back height 75cms
