Item Description
Stylish Lundtofte stainless steel coffee set by Lone Sachs
Lundtofte was a maker of top quality stylish stainless steel in the 1950’s, 60’s and early 70’s. See our blog about this maker for more information. They used a number of well known Scandinavian metalware designers to come up with stylish elegant designs that would have been expensive at the time. Today we think of stainless steel as being a cheap product, but in the 1960’s companies like Old Hall, Georg Jensen, Lundtofte and Gense were making stylish pieces in their home countries. By the 1970’s production was moving to the Far East to make cheaper pieces of lower quality for a mass market, and this eventually led to the closure of most quality European manufacturers.
This distinctive triangular design was shown in Contemporary Design In Metalwork by Larkman and Glenister published in 1963. Lone Sachs is named as the designer, but she was probably the least known of the designers used by Lundtofte which is a shame as she was obviously very talented. So many young female designers at that time will have stopped working when they got married and had children.
The cream and milk jugs came in various sizes and these sets usually just come with the standard low cream jug. Someone has added the milk jug as it has a more polished finish rather than the usual satin finish as found on the rest of the pieces.
