Super rare A Younger hall / console / writing table

We specialise in selling good pieces by this quality British maker and search hard to find rarer pieces like this and a bench that we have also just listed. We’ve had 8 of the benches in the last 12 years, but we last had one of these beautiful tables for sale in 2017 as they were sold in such few numbers. It was designed as part of the highly successful Volnay range which was introduced in 1956 and made for over a decade. We’ve seen hundreds of Volnay sideboards, as well as the dining tables and chairs, but very few of these console tables. They were probably introduced 3 or 4 years after the dining sets at a guess, and at the time pieces like this were a real luxury extra even for the middle classes who bought Younger furniture. It’s in the 1964, 65 and 66 catalogues we have, but even though we have a large collection of original catalogues we’ve yet to find any earlier ones apart from a 1956 one for a specific bedroom range.

Designed by John Herbert who was their chief designer from the early 1950’s until his untimely death in 1971. He was a very accomplished designer who came up with a number of very successful designs. This lovely piece is beautifully made as you’d expect from one of the top British makers of high end contemporary makers, and would have been expensive when new.

Made from solid afrormosia with a thick veneered top. Afrormosia is sometimes called African teak although it isn’t a part of the teak family. It was more expensive than teak to use and can’t be cut into thin veneers unlike teak, walnut and rosewood, so veneers when used were really thick in comparison to standard veneers. It has a lovely colour and grain.

106cms wide, 45.5cms deep, 79cms high. Height to underside 56cms

Fully cleaned and oiled with no obvious marks or scratches. As with all vintage furniture you must expect to see some minor signs of wear if you look very closely.
