Item Description
ANTIQUE CARVED PANEL
Depicting a dramatic biblical scene, possibly related to the Old Testament story of Abraham and Issac. A younger figure is depicted on their knees praying, whilst the older figure has a bladed article raised, ready to swing. In the background, a fire has broken out near the tower to the right, and the sea is depicted behind that. On the left, a tree is depicted, and the sun is out in full glow above a townscape.
Overall, there is a folky, somewhat naive, provincial feeling to both the carving and the decoration, which is extremely charming.
Hand-carved in relief from pine and hand-painted with polychrome and gilt decoration.
It would have probably originally formed part of an altarpiece in a chapel.
Almost certainly continental in origin, probably Italian or possibly Spanish.
Probably dating from the 16th century or possibly into the 17th century during the late Renaissance period (1500s-1600s).
Overall, the panel is in good vintage condition with wear throughout commensurate with age.
Approximate measurements: 79cm wide x 33cm high x 4cm deep.
