Item Description
This is a truly fascinating and extremely rare antique Italian monstrance or ostensorium that dates from the 19th century. Discovered recently in Tuscany this captivating treasure is outstanding in its artistic quality, creative imagionation and aura of curiosity. The main part - in the shape of the sun or surburst - is adorned with sun rays, open winged angels, grape wines and red crystals. In the middle is a circular glass vessel with a door on its back so that when opened a desired precious item could be placed within - such as a sea coral branch, a smaller work of art, a photograph etc. The base is decorated with four winged figures, one of which is an angel while the others are with animal heads: lion, eagle and a bull. From the base, a piller is erected with three statues of saints and god represented as a man with open arms. It is constructed from different metals and glass and it measures about 53.5 x 29.5 x 17 cm or approxinmately 21 x 11.6 x 6.6 inches. It is in lovely antique condition with signs of ageing mainly seen in a lovely timeworn patina which in my opinion only enhances its true beauty and splendour today. It is exactly as I discovered it.
