Item Description

A fine and attractive blue white transfer printed serving plate by Clews of Cobridge, Staffordshire, titled beneath the scene 'Landing of General Lafayette at Castle Garden, New York in 1824'.
Marquis de La Fayette was known in the United States simply as Lafayette. He was in fact a French aristocrat and a military officer who fought in the American Revolutionary War, commanding American troops in several battles, including the siege of Yorktown. By 1824 Lafayette was the last living general of the American War of Independence. Congress issued a formal invitation for him to visit the United States and this plate records his arrival on Monday 16th to a thirteen-gun salute from the batteries of Fort Diamond, accompanied by numerous additional cannon volleys from U.S. Navy and merchant ships in the harbour. Lafayette toured the United States for a little over a year and returned to France later in 1825.
James and Ralph Clews operated a successful pottery between 1817 and 1834, much of their output being made for export to the United States, their American Views proving amongst the most popular.
In excellent condition.
