Item Description

Christ and the Woman Taken in Adultery
Follower of Pieter Brueghel the Elder (c. 1525–1569)

“He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her.”
John 8:7

A compelling and richly detailed depiction of one of Christ’s most humane and enduring teachings, his defence of a woman accused of adultery and brought before him by the Scribes and Pharisees.

Following the Gospel of John, the moment is shown at its turning point: Christ, seated among the crowd, writes in the dust as tension gathers around him. The accused woman stands nearby, her head lowered, tears visible as she turns toward the only figure offering her protection.

This version follows a composition associated with Pieter Brueghel the Elder, originally known through an en grisaille model now in the Courtauld Gallery. Painted by a close follower, the work reinterprets the scene in vivid colour while retaining its structured, theatrical clarity.

A notable feature of this interpretation is the use of Latin inscriptions drawn from the Vulgate. Fragments of the Ten Commandments appear on the garments of the accusers, quietly exposing the contradiction between judgment and moral law. Christ himself writes in Latin, reinforcing the universality and authority of his words.

These details would have resonated with a learned 17th-century Flemish audience, for whom scripture, language, and visual symbolism were closely intertwined. The painting may well have served as both devotional image and moral reflection, an invitation to consider not only the actions of others, but one’s own.
