Item Description
Edinburgh Weavers framed fabric by Kenneth Rowntree
This amazing stylish piece of fabric was designed by Kenneth Rowntree in 1957 for the progressive fabric manufacturers Edinburgh Weavers. Lesley Jackson chose the design for the dust jacket of her seminal work ”Alistair Morton and Edinburgh Weavers, visionary textiles and modern art” published by the V+A in 2012. She also used it for a double page illustration as well as some text so she really rated the design.
You’ll find plenty of information on Wikipedia about Rowntree’s life and illustrious career which including teaching at the RCA in London before becoming Professor of Fine Art at Newcastle University in 1959. It was then one of the most progressive art schools in Britain and included the noted artist Victor Passmore as one of the lecturers.
Framed as a work of art which it deserves to be as it’s like a limited edition lithograph as it will have survived in small quantities. It’s title is “Full Measure ” and it’s screen printed. Lesley Jackson says of it that ”it alludes to the English ceramic tradition: the giant mugs in this surreal still life are reminiscent of Ben Nicholson’s paintings. The design has a theatrical quality, recalling backdrops in a stage set ”.
