Japanese Nishijin Gold Silk Fukuro-Obi Wall Tapestry, Edo Procession Scene

An exceptional one-of-a-kind Japanese silk wall tapestry, created from a formal vintage fukuro-obi woven in Nishijin kinran brocade with gold-foil-wrapped thread on a champagne silk ground.

This striking textile artwork presents an elaborate Edo-period inspired procession scene across the full length of the silk: figures crossing bridges, palanquins moving beneath shop awnings, market stalls, architectural details, and richly coloured narrative vignettes set against a luminous gold field. Its composition follows the visual tradition of the Japanese emakimono, or picture scroll, where a story unfolds scene by scene in continuous movement.

At this scale and level of intricacy, the original obi was not an ordinary textile but a ceremonial statement piece. Renaras has transformed it into a large decorative wall hanging while preserving the visible woven surface exactly as it was created. The result is a museum-quality Japanese textile artwork for a significant interior.

Design and Craftsmanship
The tapestry has been cut and reimagined from the original fukuro-obi, the double-layered sash traditionally worn with formal kimono for important ceremonial occasions. The silk has been professionally lined with an undyed support cloth to carry the weight of the metallic brocade and ensure a stable, elegant hang.

It is mounted between handmade hardwood bars at the top and bottom and finished with a leather hanging cord. The bars are included as part of the work. No metal touches the visible silk surface.

Nothing on the front of the silk has been altered. The textile hangs as it was woven, allowing the original Nishijin craftsmanship, gold thread, and narrative composition to remain fully visible.
